Leadership is Uncomfortable
For most of my life I have had some form of a leadership role, and let me tell you, (maybe you,re not that way but) every now and then I have moments where being a leader makes it hard to be in my own skin.
Leadership Is Uncomfortable Because It’s Supposed To Be!
As Seth Godin writes in his book Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us,
“Leadership is scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort required in leading others . . .. . . . It’s un- comfortable to stand up in front of strangers. It’s uncomfortable to propose an idea that might fail. It’s uncomfortable to challenge the status quo. It’s uncomfortable to resist the urge to settle. When you identify the discomfort, you’ve found the place where a leader is needed. If you’re not uncomfortable in your work as a leader, it’s almost certain you’re not reaching your potential as a leader.”
What does this mean to you?
Only a leader with the courage to face the massive discomfort of looking into his or her own darkest places can have real awareness of another. And only leaders who have done so can be truly compassionate with themselves and, in turn, have that same genuine compassion for others. All this springs from the birthplace of vulnerability. Such a leader not only attracts great people, but those people become Fiercely Loyal, because loyalty has many components. One of the most important ones is emotional safety.

Emotionally intelligent leaders don’t play the blame game, nor do they let rambling, negative self-talk take control of their minds. Make finding your drivers, motives, and moods an adventure. Search for clues that reveal why you feel the way you do, and what you can do in order to come to peace with whatever it is.
