The Top 3 Ways to Engage and Keep Millennials Fiercely Loyal
Times Have Changed! The Question is: Are You Changing With Them?
I think you’d agree: The greatest leaders are those who are most adaptive. in fact, to be the best, you as a leader must keep adapting and growing. Furthermore, your organization must do the same. If you actually get this then it’s likely you’ve been a leader for a long time, and your organization has what appears to be an established culture.
Now let me ask you to stop and truly consider if your culture adapted so that it’s ready for the largest worker influx in history, the Millennials?
Do you have a culture that actually does — and will continue to — generate fierce loyalty?
To answer these questions, we will have to take a step back and look at what it takes to generate fierce loyalty in your people — and, more specifically, what drives people and keeps them engaged.
As I specifically outline in my latest book, “Fiercely Loyal: How High Performance Companies Develop and Retain Top Talent,” the Millennial workforce is motivated by very different factors than the previous generations.
If you want to generate fierce loyalty in your team, you will need to ensure certain things are active parts of your culture and development.
Here are three primary motivating forces that Engage and Keep Millennials Fiercely Loyal:
- Your people know that they have a genuine sense of autonomy. Millennial want to know that you trust them. This doesn’t mean letting them run wild. It does mean that you give them a structure and the freedom to build/design how to do what needs to be done within that structure.
- Your people have training and development available to them that facilitates them being able to develop mastery. Millennials pride themselves on being quick learners, (and generally speaking, they are). Therefore they are not willing to wait ten years to master something. They want to know that their work environment will give them the training and development needed for them to to have a sense of mastery.
- Your people have certainty that they are engaged in meaningful work in a purpose-driven organization. Millennials look at money and success very differently than generation X and Baby Boomers do. Millennials are concerned about the environment, and growing number of social issues. Therefore, they want to work for and organization that reflects those concerns.
When a company culture has these three things at its very backbone, it is able to build fierce loyalty in its Millennial employees.
If your corporate culture has any sign of “That’s not the way we do things around here,” or in any way demeans any one of the three areas I just outlined, I’m sorry to say that your culture is not one that will generate disengagement rather than a fiercely loyal talent pool.
Simply put, for these ‘old school’ organizations, the writing is on the wall. The Millennial wave is already crashing on the beach and as a leader in your organization, both you and the organization itself, must adapt or risk dying off . (Or, at the very least, you will be fading off into irrelevant oblivion.)
