Leadership and The Power of Storytelling
What’s your story?
For some folks, just hearing that can set off alarm bells. It’s like having a story is a bad thing, an excuse for something that’s been done wrong.
You may be very surprised to realize the power of story. That having a story…and telling that story…maybe the single more important thing you will do as a leader.
The truth of the matter is: The power of story has become an ever increasingly fascinating area of research, which is finding its rightful place in Leadership.
“Great Communicators are not always great leaders, but great leaders are always great communicators!”
Stories, as I am sure you’ve experienced, can move us from belly hurting laughter to deep sorrowful tears. Story can change our opinions and behaviors, and most importantly inspire and motivate us to take action we would never have dared to believe possible.
What’s more, the latest scientific research shows that The Power of Storytelling actually changes the very structure of our brains, whether that is for the better or the worse depends on not only the story, but also how the story is told, who’s telling it and the place we are in (emotionally and mentally) when hearing it.
The key is not to tell just any story, but a Full Monty Story.
The difference between a “story” and a Full Monty story is that with a Full Monty story you can feel the truth of it. When a regular story has faded away as mere entertainment, the Full Monty story becomes even more deeply embedded in the psyche of the listener.
Why is a Full Monty Story So Important?
…Because it tells the truth about you, yes it reveals your triumphs, but just as importantly it also reveals your weaknesses and your struggles. Simply put, there is an element of genuine vulnerability, and vulnerability creates trust….That’s The Power of Storytelling
Here’s what’s most important about that: Truth equals Trust, Trust creates a Bond
And what do trust and the bond create?
In a nutshell: There is Great Power in the right delivery of Story
Your Story is Your Brand and Your Brand is Your Story.
However, if you are not able to fully articulate and deliver (which is much more than words) that story, there’s a good chance that every time you open your mouth you are potentially damaging your brand.
Conversely, becoming masterful (good is no longer enough) at delivering your story in a way that has the power to fully engage your audience, and have them become bonded to you, your message, and your organization is one of the most valuable things you can do.
This is once again a powerful example of why soft skill has the biggest impact on the hard bottom line.
Your Story Is Your Brand…So get the “soft” skills needed to deliver, articulately, authentically, with relevance, humor and with full transparency, in a way that fully engages and inspires, gets complete buy-in, and generates fierce loyalty.
Even though you may never have considered it: A company can rise and fall on the speaking and communication skills of its leaders!
